Which beach to choose and how to get there without a car- Montpellier

If you don’t have the chance to possess a car, going to the beach from Montpellier can seem complicated in the first place.

So, here are some advices on our Accent Français blog to help you.

Which beach should you choose?

If you desire a beach near a tourist centre with a wide range of restaurants and some busy shopping streets, so you can either choose : Palavas ( 10 km away); Carnon ( 12 km away) or La Grande Motte ( 22 km).

If you desire a wilder beach without any habitations next to it, I’ll recommand you: Le Petit Travers and Le Grand Travers ( between Carnon and La Grande Motte) or Villeneuve les Maguelone ( 15 km).

How to get there

Palavas : You’ll have to take the “Hérault Transport bus” ( blue and orange) number 131 at the outset of “Port Mariane” at the price of 6 € return with a bus every 30 minutes every day.

Carnon: You’ll have to take the “Hérault Transport bus” ( blue and orange) number 106 at the outset of "Port Marianne" or "Odysseum” at the price of 6 € return with a bus every 20 minutes and every day a part from sunday ( until the 5th of july).

Le Petit and le Grand Travers: You’ll have to take the “Hérault Transport bus” ( blue and orange) number 106 at the outset of "Port Marianne" or "Odysseum” at the price of 6 € return with a bus every 20/25 minutes and every day a part from sunday ( until the 5th of july).

La Grande-Motte: You’ll have to take the “Hérault Transport bus” ( blue and orange) number 106 at the outset of "Port Marianne" or "Odysseum” at the price of 6 € return with a bus every 35 minutes and every day a part from sunday ( until the 5th of july).

Villeneuve-les-Maguelone: It will be a TAM bus ( Montpellier town bus service) number 32 at the outset of the train station into Montpellier city centre at the price of 2.30 € return with a bus every 35 minutes, every day. After, your bus ride, you’ll still have to walk 3 km to get to the beach but you’ll be able to borrow a bike for free ( with just showing your identity card and your bus ticket) to get to the beach instead of walking.
ATTENTION!!! The bike lending is only available at the week end until the 30th of june, and then every day after this date.
If you’ve got a bike:
Palavas is 30/40 minutes away, Carnon 40/45 minutes away, La Grande Motte 1h/1h15 away and Villeneuve les Maguelone 45/50 minutes away.

But the big trick from our Accent Français blog for those who have a bike is :

Take the train from Montpellier train station to Villeneuve les Maguelone with your bike ( every train accept bikes free of charge). After 5 minutes on the train, you’ll just have 3km to pedal on your bike to get on the amazing beach of Villeneuve les Maguelone . The train costs 3.40 € return.
